Faßberg was one of the airfields brought into the Berlin airlift from August 1948 to shorten the route from Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. It handled the largest tonnage of the operation, about 540,000 tonnes of coal, and the airlift's farewell parade was held there on 29 July 1949. The Erinnerungsstätte Luftbrücke Berlin was founded there on 2 March 1990 under the patronage of Walter Momper, governing mayor of Berlin, with the support of the defence minister Gerhard Stoltenberg; the idea came from Bundeswehr soldiers when American airlift pilots visited for the fortieth anniversary in 1989. It belongs to the Bundeswehr, occupies four Nissen huts of the airlift period, and its largest exhibit is a Douglas C-47 „Rosinenbomber“. On its open-air ground, the Federal Foundation's memorial database records, stand two segments of the Berlin Wall.

The Wall Net adds that they were a gift of the Berlin Senate, and quotes the plaque: segments from Potsdamer Platz, with a line that ties them to the place — one of the consequences of the blockade and the airlift was the building of the Wall by the GDR in 1961.

Wie kam es hierher?

A gift of the Berlin Senate, according to The Wall Net; the plaque gives Potsdamer Platz as their origin.
