A segment of the Wall has stood in front of the DDR-Museum in Pforzheim since 29 September 1999. It weighs 2.6 tonnes and is 3.60 metres high. The Federal Foundation's memorials database says it is supposed to come from the stretch at Potsdamer Platz; the Badische Zeitung, on a tour of the Wall pieces in the south-west in 2014, says without qualification that it once divided Berlin there.
The museum began in 1998 with a circle of friends around Klaus Knabe, who had fled the GDR shortly before the Wall was built and after 1989 collected what the state left behind; the association „Gegen das Vergessen“ set out to interest young people in the history of the SED state. The city of Pforzheim provided the building, the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship paid for its conversion and extension, and the Baden-Württemberg education ministry for a new teaching concept, and the enlarged exhibition opened on 11 September 2003. Knabe died on 11 February 2012; the foundation Lernort Demokratie – Das DDR-Museum Pforzheim, which he had worked towards, was set up that July.
