The two elements at Schengen stand on the Moselle, beside the agreement monument — three brass stars — and a colonnade of nations. The Schengen Agreement was signed on 14 June 1985, about a hundred metres away. It is arguably the best-sited piece in Europe: a border that could not be crossed, a hundred metres from the place where border controls were abolished.

The two did not arrive together. The Centre Européen Schengen, which runs the museum, says one was a gift from the Berlin Senate in 2010 and the other was added in 2015, painted with a peace dove and a portrait of Mikhail Gorbachev. Who gave the second is not stated.

Wie kam es hierher?

One of the two elements was a gift from the Senate of Berlin in 2010, the year the museum opened; the museum's operator records the other as added in 2015, with a peace dove and a portrait of Gorbachev, and does not say who gave it.
