Buenos Aires holds at least two documented sites; this one is unusual in the global inventory for being held by a news publisher rather than a government, museum or university.
Perfil's own account dates the idea to 9 November 1989, the day the Wall opened, when the group was about to launch the magazine Noticias and its chief executive, Jorge Fontevecchia, asked the East German ambassador in Buenos Aires whether a piece could be had. The answer, as Perfil tells it, was that pieces were not being given out but an exception could be made if the publisher paid for a school in Germany, then about 10,000 dollars. Twenty metres of wall came by sea, a business Perfil says took 500 days and a hundred people. It stood first at the company's old building on Chacabuco 271 and now stands at its headquarters at California 2715 in Barracas; small pieces were broken off and given to readers of Noticias with certificates of authenticity.
The Federal Foundation records that Perfil supported the shipment of twenty running metres of the Wall to Buenos Aires in 1991 for America '92, the Columbus quincentenary exhibition at the old port, which has its own record here. The two accounts give the same length and the same year; neither mentions the other's display.
Wie kam es hierher?
Brought from Berlin by Editorial Perfil on the initiative of Jorge Fontevecchia, who began the request on 9 November 1989; 20 metres in all, installed at the company's headquarters in Barracas.
