A segment stands in a garden inside the Palacio San Martín, the ceremonial headquarters of Argentina's foreign ministry. Access follows the building rather than the object: this is a working diplomatic site, opened to the public only for guided visits.
The ministry's own page for the piece adds that the fragment comes from Marzahn, in East Berlin, and was presented on 10 November 1999, the tenth anniversary of the opening; the plaque says it shows the friendship between the two countries and reminds Argentines that freedom, democracy and human rights are never secure unless citizens strive to defend them. The ministry names the German government as giver; the listings and a 2019 BBC Mundo report name the Berlin Senate, and both readings are kept here.
Wie kam es hierher?
Donated by the Berlin Senate for the tenth anniversary of the fall of the Wall, presented as an expression of German-Argentine friendship.
