A whole segment of the Wall reached Santo Domingo in 2019 as a gift from Germany. Diario Libre says it was donated by the German ambassador at the time, Volker Pellet, and reached Santo Domingo after two months at sea. A competition for a design to cover it was won by the Dominican artist Martín López with "Tótem: por los derechos humanos, la democracia y la libertad", which draws on resistance figures including Fray Antonio de Montesinos and the Mirabal sisters; the German company Wallprint applied it with a concrete printer.
It was inaugurated in May 2021 at the monument to Montesinos on the Malecón. The salt air damaged it, and in February 2022 the Culture Ministry and the municipality moved it to the front garden of the Museo Nacional de Historia y Geografía in the Plaza de la Cultura (Listín Diario). On 9 November 2024, the thirty-fifth anniversary of the fall, it was shown again after restoration by conservators of CENACOD, working with the German embassy and the Culture Ministry (Diario Libre).
Neither paper says where in Berlin the segment stood.
Wie kam es hierher?
Given to the Dominican Republic by the German embassy in 2019; the surface printed with López's design.
