A section of the Wall and a memorial plaque stand on the square in front of Ahrweiler station. On 5 October 1989 the first of the sealed special trains carrying East Germans out of the West German embassy in Prague reached this platform, having crossed GDR territory and changed at Hof. Around 800 people got off here. The minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate, Carl-Ludwig Wagner, met the train in person and handed out new identity cards and 100 D-Mark of welcome money, and the town turned out on balconies and at level crossings to wave the train in.

Of every record in this catalogue, this is the one with the most unusual provenance. Almost all the rest were given by a government, bought by a collector or acquired by a museum. This one was sent by the people who came through — a gift from the refugees to the district that received them.

Wie kam es hierher?

Given to the Ahrweiler district by the former GDR citizens who arrived on the Prague trains, as thanks for their reception.
