Three original segments stand on the Moselle bank behind the Deutsches Eck, carrying the inscriptions “Den Opfern der Teilung” — to the victims of division — “17. Juni 1953” and “9. November 1989”. The site was already a memorial to German unity: in 1953 President Theodor Heuss declared the empty plinth of the Kaiser Wilhelm monument a memorial to the unity still to be regained. The segments arrived in 1990 and completed an argument the site had been making, unfinished, for thirty-seven years.
Wie kam es hierher?
Handed over in June 1990 by Lothar de Maizière, then prime minister of the German Democratic Republic — one of very few records in this catalogue donated by the East German state itself rather than by Berlin after unification.
