The Federal Foundation's essay on the Wall in Germany tells the story: the Düsseldorf ophthalmologist Dr Joachim Zeitz bought three segments in the early 1990s that had been part of the border at the Potsdamer Platz, because the painting on them by Thierry Noir appealed to him. One stands in his garden; the other two he later gave to the town of Meerbusch. The head of the Meerbusch-Gymnasium had shown interest and proposed the schoolyard, and the choice fell on its publicly accessible edge in Strümp, where the two were inaugurated on 23 May 2011, the sixty-second anniversary of the Basic Law.

The Wall Net, a general reference, has the purchase in 1990 from NVA stocks, almost twenty years on a company car park, and the gift to the school in 2009, which fits the Foundation's account of the gift but not its date for the inauguration; both are given here. The Berlin Wall Archive lists the site under Düsseldorf with one segment; the Foundation and The Wall Net both say two.
