The exhibition is at the European Solidarity Centre. The argument the site makes is chronological: the strike at the Lenin Shipyard in August 1980 came nine years before the Wall opened. A German object in a Polish museum, used to say that the sequence usually told in the West runs backwards.
The Federal Foundation records the piece differently: brought by the governing mayor of Berlin, Eberhard Diepgen, as his gift to the twentieth anniversary of the August Agreements on 29 August 2000, and standing outdoors just outside the shipyard at the corner of Wały Piastowskie and Kupiecka, on a paved square with a rust-coloured relief of Europe and a small plaque in three languages. Which of the two describes the segment today is for a visit or the Centre to settle.
Local reporting from July 2000 fills in the arrival: the segment was brought to the shipyard by a Gdańsk transport firm as a donation, kept in a workshop hall at first and shown from 29 August 2000 near the BHP hall, with the director of the Checkpoint Charlie museum, Rainer Hildebrandt, among those involved.
Wie kam es hierher?
By the Federal Foundation's account, a gift from the governing mayor of Berlin, Eberhard Diepgen, handed over at the shipyard on 29 August 2000.
