The site does the interpretive work by itself: the building opposite was built in 1902 as the offices of De Beers, Cecil Rhodes's company. A monument to one division stands outside a building renamed for the end of another. It first stood at the BMW Pavilion on the waterfront and was moved in 2010 to St George's Mall.

Given to Nelson Mandela after a state visit to Berlin in 1996, from the Senate's gift stock, and identified in some accounts as piece No. 214.
