The eighteenth-century landscape park at Bretton Hall now holds one of the largest open-air displays of modern sculpture anywhere, with work by Henry Moore, Andy Goldsworthy, Eduardo Paolozzi and Sophie Ryder. Late in the 1990s the British patron Lord Palumbo gave the park one of the segments he had bought in London in 1994, and it has stood outdoors ever since.

What it says is disappearing. The graffito was painted in 1990 on the Wall at Niederkirchnerstraße by Jürgen Große, who signed himself Indiano, as part of a series he called his Global Messages. Rain has washed it almost completely away; the words Fight your inner can still just be made out, and the rest of the sentence is gone.

That makes this one of the clearest records in the catalogue of what open-air display costs. The same donor's London purchase of 1994 also produced the segment at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania, where an Indiano painting from the same series is kept in a vitrine and is still legible.

Wie kam es hierher?

Given to the sculpture park in the late 1990s by Lord Palumbo, from segments he bought in London in 1994. Painted at Niederkirchnerstraße in 1990 by Jürgen Große, known as Indiano.
