The record

A segment painted with the cover of Ken Follett's novel 'Kinder der Freiheit', unveiled by the author in 2014 at his German publisher's head office.

On 4 November 2014 Ken Follett visited the Carlswerk in Köln-Mülheim, where his German publisher Bastei Lübbe has its head office, and unveiled an original piece of the Berlin Wall. BEOS, the company that owns and manages the site, reported two days later that the element, weighing about 2.75 tonnes, had been painted with the cover of his new novel 'Kinder der Freiheit', published by Bastei Lübbe, and now stood at the entrance to the Carlswerk.

A photograph taken by Elke Wetzig on 9 June 2024 and published on Wikimedia Commons shows the segment in the Carlswerk, at the publisher's seat, with Follett's signature on the painted face. That is the latest record read; exactly where on the site it stands today is not stated.

How did it get here?

Painted with the cover of 'Kinder der Freiheit' for the novel's launch, and unveiled by Ken Follett on 4 November 2014.
