The record
Given by Elmar Prost and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and inaugurated at the Hungarian memorial to the 1989 Picnic, thirty years on.
A piece of the Wall was inaugurated on 18 August 2019 at Sopronpuszta, next to the remains of the Iron Curtain, to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic, the peace demonstration held on the Austro-Hungarian border in August 1989. The Pan-European Picnic's own site, which carries the news, says it was given to Sopron by Elmar Prost and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Christian Hirte, a German government state secretary, spoke, as did Sopron's mayor Tamás Fodor and the justice minister Judit Varga; Hirte said that this piece of the Berlin Wall was a symbol of the Picnic as the starting point of the fall of the Iron Curtain.
The page gives no dimensions and does not say where in Berlin the piece stood. The Berlin Wall Archive lists Sopron with no segment count, and its pin was in the middle of the town, about nine kilometres from the memorial; the position here is the memorial park's.
How did it get here?
Given to the town of Sopron by Elmar Prost and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, 2019.
