An element of about 2.5 tonnes stands at Langelandsfort, the coastal fort that watched the Baltic approaches for NATO from 1953 until the Cold War ended and has been a museum since 1997. The setting is unusually literal: the segment is displayed among the hardware of the confrontation it belonged to — the submarine Springeren, the minesweeper Askø and a Soviet MiG-23. Most recipients place a segment among civic symbols; this one places it among weapons.
It was inaugurated on 13 August 2011, the fiftieth anniversary of the building of the Wall, by the Danish climate minister, Lykke Friis. In the autumn of 2019 it went on tour, starting in Copenhagen at the Golden Days festival, before coming back to the fort. Since 2024 the museum has also shown a block from the first Wall of August 1961, lent by the Berlin Wall Foundation, in its exhibition on escapes across the Baltic.
Wie kam es hierher?
Given in 2011 — by the Berlin Senate, in the Danish press's account, and handed over by the Berlin Wall Foundation, in the museum's own. Recorded as originally standing at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin-Mitte.
