An original segment stands at the south-west corner of the Englischer Garten, beside the United States Consulate General on the Königinstraße and within sight of the Bavarian State Chancellery. It has been there since the beginning of October 1996: the visitor guide this record first rested on gives 3 October, German Unity Day, and the Bundesstiftung Aufarbeitung's memorials database gives 2 October, with the unveiling marking the sixth anniversary of unity and a speech by the minister-president, Edmund Stoiber. The sculptor Joachim Hoppe made the segment into a memorial, with three iron plates set at an angle into the ground and leaning left and right to open a path — a breach in the Wall. The site is freely accessible at any hour, which is not true of most segments standing next to diplomatic buildings.

Wie kam es hierher?

Acquired in 1990 by Johannes Singhammer, then a member of parliament for the CSU, who set it up in his own garden. He gave it to the Free State of Bavaria a few years later, and it was installed on its present site in 1996.
