In February 2000 the editors of Superillu had a piece of the Berlin Wall delivered to Offenburg, as a present for the sixtieth birthday of Hubert Burda, the publisher and patron of the arts, and as a thank-you. The Badische Zeitung, which photographed it in the Burda Medien Park for a tour of the Wall pieces in southern Baden in 2014, gave the reason: Burda had been the first Western publisher present in the GDR, with Burda Moden in the 1980s, which gave it a head start in 1989, and that groundwork is partly why Superillu still overshadowed everything from Spiegel to Stern in eastern Germany. The Medien Park was inaugurated the same year.
The magazine bought the element from one of the many building contractors that pulled the Wall down on the GDR's behalf in the summer of 1990. Where it stood is no longer traceable — somewhere in the centre of Berlin, by the paper's account. The painting came afterwards: Thierry Noir, who had illegally painted many sections of the Wall in Berlin with his big-nosed heads, decorated it once it had been bought, so the picture dates from after the Wall rather than from it.
Wie kam es hierher?
Bought by Superillu from a contractor that demolished the Wall in 1990, painted afterwards by Thierry Noir, and given to Hubert Burda for his sixtieth birthday in February 2000.
