A three-ton slab in a food hall, its graffiti titled Bloody Erich. Donated to the city in January 1991 after the unification celebrations.
A slab of about three tons stands in the Armory food hall at Seattle Center, recorded at roughly 12.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, with a commemorative plaque beside it. The painted work on it carries a title, Bloody Erich — a reference to Erich Honecker, and one of the few records in this catalogue where the graffiti is a named work rather than anonymous marking. Like the Las Vegas slab it sits in a place people go for lunch rather than for history.
How did it get here?
Donated by the German businessman Achim Becker in 1990 and recorded as having stood at Potsdamer Platz near Checkpoint Charlie. The plaque reads: “This trophy of freedom was donated to the City of Seattle in January 1991 after it was exhibited on Capitol Hill during the celebrations of German unification on 3 October 1990.”
