A segment of the Wall in Magdeburg. It belongs to a small and easily missed group in this catalogue: pieces that went to cities in the former GDR. Almost everything here travelled west or abroad, because that is where the buyers and the diplomatic recipients were. A segment standing in Magdeburg is a piece of the border returned to the side it was built to hold in.
The city's own page on its memorials places it on Lothar-Kreyssig-Straße, where a timeline of the division runs between it and the citizens' monument to the Monday demonstrations of 1989, and the Volksstimme records how it got there and what happened to it: given by the Springer publishing house in its round of gifts to the state capitals, vandalised in April 2012, and redesigned for 9 November 2013 by the Magdeburg designer Christoph Ackermann, who won a city competition with a dove breaking from its cage and a woodpecker pecking the outline of a united Germany into the concrete.
Wie kam es hierher?
Given by Axel Springer's publishing house in its 2009 round of gifts to the state capitals, by the Volksstimme's account; redesigned by Christoph Ackermann in 2013.

Volksstimme, 29 July 2011: the segment in the chestnut grove in front of the cathedral was given to Magdeburg, as to the other state capitals, by the Springer publishing house, and a timeline of the twenty-eight years from the building of the Wall to its fall was to link it to the citizens' monument some fifty metres away.
