The record

Listed by US Africa Command among the landmarks of its headquarters post in Stuttgart-Möhringen, near the barracks entrance; not reported since 2013.

US Africa Command's fact sheet on Kelley Barracks, last updated in May 2013, lists a piece of the Berlin Wall among the post's landmarks, beside a Second World War US tank and a Soviet-era tank captured from Iraq in 1991. The piece, it says, is displayed near the barracks entrance as a reminder of the role US forces played in the peaceful end of the Cold War and the unification of Germany.

The post in Stuttgart-Möhringen opened in May 1938 as the Helenen Kaserne, became an American installation in December 1945 and was the headquarters of the US Army's VII Corps from 1951 until the corps headquarters was inactivated in 1992. US Africa Command has been there since 2007 and became a combatant command in October 2008.

The fact sheet does not say when or by whom the piece was set up, how large it is, or where in Berlin it stood. The Wall Net, a general reference, describes it as parts of the Hinterlandmauer, citing AFRICOM. No later account has been found, so whether it is still there is not confirmed. The barracks is a US military installation and not open to the public.

How did it get here?

Shown near the entrance of the US headquarters post as a reminder of the US forces' part in the end of the Cold War; when it arrived and where it stood in Berlin are not recorded.
