AN ARTIST ON THE WALL

Berlin Wall pieces painted by Jürgen Große (Indiano)

Four sites holding the Global Messages that Jürgen Große, signing himself Indiano, painted on the Wall in 1990 as the demolition crews worked along it.

Jürgen Große painted after the border opened rather than before it. Signing himself Indiano, he set himself the task of painting as many sections as he could before they were taken down, and completed 223 of them in seven months: a series he called his Global Messages, short imperatives in block capitals. CHANGE YOUR LIFE is on the segment outside the Imperial War Museum in London; Change myself and Wake up are at Nemacolin Woodlands in Pennsylvania. The Imperial War Museum spells his name Grosse, the Federal Foundation writes Große, and the signature on the concrete is Indiano.

Three of the four sites came through one collector. Lord Palumbo gave the Imperial War Museum its segment in 1991 and bought six segments in London in 1994; from those he supplied the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and, through the Pennsylvania businessman Joseph Hardy, Nemacolin. The fourth site is a private property near Basel, where the Swiss entrepreneur who had bought Kiddy Citny's hearts at the Monaco auction later added two of Große's segments. Wakefield and Nemacolin carry paintings from the same series and make the plainest comparison in the atlas of what open-air display costs: one has stood in Yorkshire rain until only the words Fight your inner can be made out, and the other is kept in a vitrine and can still be read.

Each site says what its evidence rests on, from Listed to Confirmed, and whether the piece can be seen today; a listing in a source inventory is not a confirmation that anyone has seen it. The research methodology explains how claims are weighed.
