An original panel of the Berlin Wall stands in the atrium of Georgetown University in Qatar, in the Education City campus on the western edge of Doha. It was unveiled on 11 December 2018 by Qatar Foundation, Qatar Museums and the university's dean: just over a metre wide and more than three and a half metres high, steel-reinforced concrete sprayed with graffiti.
The Federal Foundation's entry gives the panel a history. It is one of fifteen segments painted in 2007 by pupils of the Carl-Zeiss-Oberschule in Berlin-Lichtenrade under the direction of Thierry Noir, in the Kreuzberg yard of the builders' merchant Dämmisol, which had bought the elements and paid for the school project. Six of the pupils' segments were sold to the company Veloform when Dämmisol gave up the site in 2008; Qatar Foundation acquired this one, painted with a coloured figure, and shows it on loan from the Qatar Museums Authority. Among those who spoke at the unveiling was the university's deputy dean, Kai-Henrik Barth, who with his wife described growing up on opposite sides of the Wall.
Qatar Museums tells it more simply: one of two sections the German embassy gave to Qatar Museums as part of the Qatar–Germany Year of Culture 2017, the other standing in the exhibition hall of the Qatar National Convention Centre nearby. Both readings are kept.
Two inventory listings describe this panel and are carried on this page. The Federal Foundation publishes one text, covering both Education City sites, on each of its two Doha entries; the first entry is pinned within fifty metres of this atrium and the second near the convention centre, and the two listings are assigned on that basis. The Berlin Wall Archive's Doha listing follows the Wall Net's entry of the same title, which places its one segment in this atrium.
The local press report of the unveiling gives the panel as two metres thick, which cannot be right for a wall element and is left out here.
