The record

Schleswig-Holstein's piece of the Axel Springer gift to every federal state, unveiled by the minister-president at the end of 2009.

An original segment stands on the open ground in front of Schleswig-Holstein's Ministry of Economic Affairs in Kiel. It is the state's share of the gift that Axel Springer made, through BILD, to every federal state for the twentieth anniversary of the opening, and the plaque at its foot says so: a present from BILD to the Land Schleswig-Holstein, in memory of the newspaper's founder Axel Springer, who held on to his dream of German unity against all resistance. The same plaque calls the Wall twenty-eight years a means and a sign of oppression, and its pieces a symbol of freedom and self-determination and a warning that both are always at risk.

The Bundesstiftung Aufarbeitung gives two dates. Its memorials database says the minister-president, Peter Harry Carstensen, unveiled the segment on the ministry's grounds on 8 December 2009; the foundation's essay on the Wall in Germany lists Kiel as receiving its segment on 10 November 2009. The Wall Net says November 2009.

An older lead had put Kiel's segment outside the Landeshaus, the seat of the state parliament. The sources read here put it at the ministry.

This record has no pin: the listing came without coordinates, and no checked coordinate for the ministry at Düsternbrooker Weg 94 was found.

How did it get here?

A gift from Axel Springer AG through BILD to the Land Schleswig-Holstein for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall, one of the segments the company gave to every federal state.
