The cubes are a pair, at the visitor entrance to the European Parliament. Both segments had stood elsewhere in Brussels beforehand and were gathered here in 2021 under a project to protect and preserve them, run jointly by the Belgian state, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Parliament. One of them is the element that came from Potsdamer Platz and spent years in Parc Léopold; the other was shown in the exhibition on the Place du Luxembourg for the twentieth anniversary in 2009 and bought by the Belgian state afterwards.

This is the only record in the catalogue where segments have been enclosed expressly to stop them deteriorating. Everywhere else the object stands in the weather as it did in Berlin, and the paint goes the way paint goes. Putting the Wall in a vitrine is a decision about what it has become: not a structure any more but an artefact.

Wie kam es hierher?

Assembled in 2021 from other Brussels locations: the Potsdamer Platz element given by the city of Berlin and shown in Parc Léopold from April 2004, and an element from the 2009 Place du Luxembourg exhibition acquired by the Belgian State.
