Berlin Wall pieces that moved, closed or disappeared

Segments that have left the place they were first recorded: into storage, into another building, across a city, or out of sight when their venue closed.

A catalogue holding one position and no history of positions will be wrong within a few years, so these records keep the history. Some are the places the Wall has left. Freedom Park in Rosslyn is where a dozen segments stood first, before most went across the Potomac to the Newseum, which held the largest stretch outside Germany until it closed on the last day of 2019 and sent eight segments and a guard tower into storage in Maryland. The Times Square Ripley's has closed; a spy-themed bar in Chicago displayed a piece among its props until it shut in March 2023, and nobody recorded where the piece went; a gallery in Dhaka showed a segment for a single day. Some are the places things went: the two glass cubes at the European Parliament now hold the element from Leopold Park; and the atrium at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, which lost the largest collection in the country when the Newseum closed, acquired a different piece of the same wall when Johns Hopkins SAIS moved in from its courtyard on Massachusetts Avenue.

The rest are moves recorded in full. The five Noir and Citny panels went from the courtyard at 520 Madison Avenue to a warehouse, back to the lobby, and then to a depot in Connecticut; the half-heart that stood on the USS Intrepid from 1990 went back to its owner in 2006 and into his store at Lyndhurst. Two segments the GDR granted a Hungarian party in 1990 vanished from a Buda park in 2004 and were traced, with the embassy's help, to the garden of a charity. A segment put up at a Greek spa town was dismantled because the local authority decided it had no connection to the place, and re-erected in Thessaloniki. Hamburg's was first set beside the motorway exit for Berlin and then brought to the Elbphilharmonie square; Cape Town's moved from a waterfront pavilion to St George's Mall; Ottawa's stood for years in the building where the Two Plus Four framework was agreed before going to the war museum; Manila's went unclaimed in Berlin for a decade, was installed at the National Museum in 2015 and moved again in 2020. Even Checkpoint Charlie belongs here: nothing original stands at the most visited Cold War address in Berlin, and the genuine guardhouse is seven kilometres away. Where the atlas cannot say where an object is now, as with the Migration Museum's two segments after Lewisham closed, it says so rather than carrying a status it cannot support.

Each site says what its evidence rests on, from Listed to Confirmed, and whether the piece can be seen today; a listing in a source inventory is not a confirmation that anyone has seen it. The research methodology explains how claims are weighed.
